press release

This exhibition focuses on the liberation of colour in modern art. Its stars are artists like Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, Jan Toorop, Piet Mondrian, Kees van Dongen and Rik Wouters. But the show also looks back to the works that inspired them: paintings by Monet, Seurat, Signac, Cézanne, Van Gogh and the young Matisse. The exhibition has been organised in close cooperation with Antwerp’s Royal Museum of Fine Arts and will include top works from that museum’s collection. In this respect, it can be seen as part of the year of events being held to mark the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the Cultural Treaty between Flanders and the Netherlands and to celebrate the cultural exchanges that have taken place between the Netherlands and the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium as a result of that agreement.
