Philip Guston (b. 191, Montreal/Canada; d. 1980, Woodstock/NY) was one of the most important and courageous Abstract Expressionist painters and a member of the 'New York School' group of artists. He was largely self-taught. Raised in Los Angeles, he later lived in New York and at the Artists' Cooperative in Woodstock.
