press release

The banquete (banquet) project is conceived as a work in progress that will evolve throughout the whole of 2003. It includes a changing and growing exhibition that will travel from Barcelona to Karlsruhe and from there to Madrid. The programme of activities running parallel to the exhibition will consist of workshops, round tables, publications and interventions in public spaces such as markets, restaurants, shops where food is sold and outlying neighbourhoods.

The analogy between metabolism and communication constitutes the thread that runs through banquete, which is taken up here in the sense of dialogue, as introduced by Plato into western culture. In keeping with this, banquete takes the form of a conversation between artists, scientists and thinkers from a diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines. Works by more than 50 artists from 24 countries are gathered together, with specialists from fields such as biology, economics, literature, anthropology, communication, the neurosciences and social and environmental activism.

Within the space of the Palau de la Virreina, banquete_ covers the various communications between the bonfire, the table and the network, from tribal communication to the telematic and interactive architectures of virtual communities. It also invites us to reflect on the structures, patterns and processes that govern the flows of food and information. Underlying all this is a critical gaze that looks in depth at the relationships between the biological metabolism and the socio-economic metabolism on a global scale.

The overall aim of banquete_ is to give expression to a collective seismograph in order to record -and if possible encourage- emerging opportunities in the interconnected but also incommunicado, renewed and unequal culture of the 21st century.

banquete_ is an exhibition co-produced by the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, the Conde Duque Cultural Centre (MediaLabMadrid) in Madrid and the ZKM (Center for Art and Media) in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The project is the concept of Karin Ohlenschläger and Luis Rico (directors of MediaLabMadrid) and is curated in conjunction with Iván de la Nuez (essayist and director of exhibitions at the Palau de la Virreina) and Peter Weibel (artist, theorist and director of the ZKM in Karlsruhe).
