Commissioned by Manchester International Festival and Manchester Art Gallery.
To celebrate do it’s 20th anniversary, do it 2013 at Manchester Art Gallery premiered 70 brand new artists’ instructions, and brought together artists from the first do it experiments with a new generation of contemporary artists from July 5 through September 22, 2013. Divided in four rooms, the exhibition turned the notion of viewing into an active and performative encounter between artists and visitors. The Active Room, presented by the artist Richard Wentworth, contained a series of instructions aimed at the public. The Homage Room featured living artists’ reactions to instructions originally created by artists that are no longer with us. The Film Room screened a large number of do it video works. And finally, the Archive Room, curated by ICI and Hans Ulrich Obrist, in collaboration with Joseph Grigely, presented a collection of ephemeral and indexical documentation from do it participants over the past 20 years; this archive project is an historical record of Hans Ulrich Obrist’s ongoing project to date. The exhibition was organized along different series of events, screenings, live performances, plays, concerts, and exhibitions that took place all around Manchester for the Manchester International Festival. Manchester Art Gallery hosted an opening reception on July 5, 2013 in addition to the programming that took place throughout the duration of the exhibition.
