Claude Cahun (born 1894, Nantes, d. 1954, St. Helier, Jersey) was a poet, essayist, and surrealist photographer whose work explored gender identity. Together with her stepsister Suzanne Malherbe aka Marcel Moore (graphic artist, photographer, sculptor, and writer), she had an artist's salon in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. In 1932 they became members of the "Association of the Ecrivains and Artistes Révolutionnaires" and met André Breton and the Circle of Surrealists. From 1940 they participated at activities in the Resistance and printed leaflets - 1944 to 45 they both were imprisoned by the Gestapo and pardoned, but Cahun never recovered from the strain of imprisonment and died in 1954.
